Guarding the Gates (from our YouVersion Reading Plan for this series)

We've starting doing something with more and more frequency over the past year that I. AM. LOVING. We invite everyone to a reading plan in the YouVersion app that relates to the season (Advent, Lent, etc.) or our current series of Sunday message. I can't believe how encouraging it is to track along with others as we read scripture together and how much it reinforces what God is speaking to us here at Freedom. I've included this past Tuesday's devotional (the write-up before the scripture reading) for you today because I loved the concept and think you'll find it helpful.

By the way, you can always jump into the reading plan with us at any time... it doesn't matter at all if you're "behind" or missed a few days.

YOUVERSION READING PLAN: Pathway to Peace

In the Word with you,
Pastor Tracy

Balance - Guard the Gates
By Road Warriors

We had prayed about this. I remember the conversation driving to our hotel a few hours earlier, and the conviction that had grown in my heart about it. It was a leap, but I needed to bid the career farewell and narrow my focus to the business startup, mission work, and family. Peace overwhelmed my uncertainty, knowing I was about to remove a giant from my shoulders and elevate almost every other aspect of my life.

My prospective employers on the other end of the line were taken back when I declined interest. This months-long pursuit was a good fit, but it would likely have taken me straight back to where I had begun, over-committed and off balance.

When push came to shove, it was over. Chains broken – a major step of faith. I had a sense of well-being I hadn’t experienced in a very long time. I breathed a deep sigh of relief and sincerely thanked God as we strolled to the beach for a long quiet walk.

I had guarded the gates. When we consider opening the door to more, even things we strongly desire, we must vigilantly yet respectfully protect the balance and purpose God has given us. We can do this in partnership with Him by praying specifically about what we add to our plate. We can do devotion that relates to the question, and then wait and listen to hear if it is ours to take. Is it moving us closer to or further from balance, to or from peace, and to or from God’s desire for our lives?

Guarding the gates in partnership with our Creator is a foundational element of the journey from stress to peace. It provides an amazing purpose-oriented filter for decision-making. We seek His view and purpose in everything. Over time our lives begin to consist more of things that are spiritually valuable and impactful. Life becomes more balanced, peaceful, and meaningful. We move closer to God. This is big.

What is currently standing at your gates, and how would it impact your pursuit of peace if you were to allow it entry? Would it take you nearer or further from balance, and God’s desire for your life? What can be laid down or reduced in your life to foster balance?

A Question and An Invitation (#JesusIsNotARoleModel)

We've been talking about inviting people to church and into conversations about faith this month a lot. Do you ever find it hard to know what to say about Christianity vs. other religions or just aren't sure what you believe about it? I was sent this video and immediately wanted to share it with all of you. I think you'll find it to be helpful for your personal faith and a good reminder of some important truths. But I hope you'll also be inspired by the simple challenge to ask questions, listen to others and share who Jesus really is and what He came to do. It's a worthwhile 15 minute investment.

Enjoy!
Pastor Tracy

Jesus is the Reason for the Season (a way to focus on Him this Christmas)

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
— John 1:14

How's everyone doing? Are you loving the season? Will you be glad it's over?

I'm always working hard to fight the tendency to define Christmas by everything that has to get done. I know the season is about Jesus and I can easily find myself lamenting the pressures and costs that inevitably come in December. Certainly that's not the purpose or focus of Advent but alas, as I write this my inbox and social feeds are filling up with Black Friday deals.

In case you find your heart in this annual struggle as so many of us do, I simply want to offer one remedy that we've incorporated into our family this year. Nothing points us back to the 'reason for the season' like being in the scriptures, reading about the Word who became flesh and dwelled among us. If you haven't started already, here are a few reading plans from YouVersion for you to make a part of your days this month to keep your heart pointed toward the living Word. (see images below)

My prayer for my family and yours is that we will all draw closer to Jesus as we anticipate the celebration of His arrival.

See you on Sunday,
Pastor Tracy

Dashboard Lights (getting trained-up)

This month we are looking at Acts 2:42-47 to see what some of the distinctives of the early church were and what we can learn from them. It's also where our core values come from. This church was very clearly connecting, being trained, and impacting the world around them for Christ.

With that in mind, we're going to look at the central importance of training this Sunday. Luke, the writer of Acts, says that they were devoted to it. It was that important.

So how do we do that in 2019? Among other things, we can never underestimate the power of reading, studying and applying the Word of God. We need scripture in our lives every day. No other resource is more powerful.

With that in mind, I tried something new on the YouVersion app last month. It was a devotional plan called "Beyond Blessed" and it reminded me that there are always beautiful things to learn and unlimited ways to grow in Christ. (The devotional I've linked to is called "Dashboard Lights" and I found it so insightful!) So if getting trained-up in the Word seems like a daunting task, here is a gentle reminder that wonderful resources are all around you.

I've included a few ideas for how you can get started or try something new in your journey to be trained to think and act like Jesus. The first one is the devotional that I just finished in case you'd like to give it try.

Honoured to help you train,
Pastor Tracy

Pray Until You Pray (another great YouVersion plan)

We should seek to pray long enough and authentically enough that we move past formalism and unreality and begin to delight in God’s presence and esteem His will.

I've been switching up my devotional time over the summer and discovering some great reading plans in YouVersion. I loved this one because of how it combined prayer and scripture, helping me gain insight into both while I worked through it. Spoiler: On Day 1 the above quote appears, without much ado, but it stuck with me. You never know what the Holy Spirit might have in store for you when you step into His Word and presence day by day. So go ahead and subscribe to this plan (or any other one!) and use these beautiful summer days to build a new rhythm into your life. And for all of you who are already into plans like these, consider this a recommendation for what's next. 🙌

In Christ,
Pastor Tracy

Better Things (let's read Hebrews together!)

On Sunday we started our "Better Than" series. Essentially, we are dropping into Hebrews to hear how the author sets up Christ's superiority to, well, everything. I do lament one thing... that we don't have time to do the whole book in this series. There is so much in Hebrews that helps us "be taken forward to maturity" (6:1) that we could spends many weeks camped right here.

So, let's do something together between now and Easter Sunday (April 1). Let's read Hebrews. It has 13 jam-packed chapters with lots of opportunities to slow down, pray, dig deeper and discover more about who Jesus is.

YouVersion has a 13-day plan that I invite you to join on your device or on the website. (There are 24 days until Easter Sunday so you don't have to rush through it.) Go ahead and click the link to add the plan to your app or account. You can also search the app or site for "Deeper into Scripture: Hebrews" to find it.

Let's read and meditate on Hebrews together this month. I'm looking forward to digging into "better things" with you this Easter season.

See you on Sunday,
Pastor Tracy

This Sunday...

Better Than Moses

Jesus is just better! Isn't He? You can tack anything on the end of that sentence and it would be true. This week we will be taking a look at Jesus being better than Moses. To us that seems like a no-brainer. The early Christians needed to be persuaded that their greatest hero could be eclipsed, but we know better - or can we fall into the same trap, ourselves? Let's explore on Sunday.

See you then,
Bjorn
