How do you define humility? Perhaps it's "a modest view of one's own importance." Or, "not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less." I like this one I came across, - "The quality that lets us go more than halfway to meet the needs of others."
But I believe our passage from 1 Peter 5:5-6 goes even deeper than how we typically define humility... and it is an incredibly significant topic to dig into on the first Sunday of Advent for this Christmas season!
Want to learn about humility? Look to God-in-flesh, see how the Creator of the Universe came to us in the lowliest, most helpless form to bring humility back to a world that had been ripped apart by pride (the root of sin).
I spent some time this week in an old book that my mom gave me while I was in bible college - "Humility" by Andrew Murray. In it he defines the title in a way that speaks to the example of Jesus and now into the very core of our lives in Christ. "Humility is the place of entire dependance on God."
That really is the heart of this season of Advent and as we'll see in the scriptures this Sunday, the place of true blessing for our lives today and for eternity.
Looking forward to sharing with you,
P. Tracy
