Freedom Devotional (August 13)

The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-37) is full of familiar verses. This is where Jesus declares, "I am the resurrection and the life." (v.25) This is also where we find the shortest verse in the Bible - "Jesus wept." (v.35) I've known this verse since I was a kid listening to Psalty tapes but as an adult I started asking questions about Jesus weeping over the death of a man that He already knows He is going to raise from the dead. (See verses 4,11 and 23.)

It's become clear to me that as the Resurrection and the Life, Jesus has a significant reaction when he looks at our pain and the consequences of our sin. His response to us is beautiful and telling. I'm looking forward to talking about it with you on Sunday.

And in the spirit of full disclosure, since the day I chose this passage, every time I think of this message a particular song from my early years comes to mind. Take a look at this video and get yourself ready for our study of John 11!
