What about fasting? (Freedom Devotional - January 14)

Fasting Prayer.jpg

The Holy Spirit is so amazing! Even though we are not in the middle of a sermon series, Pastor Tracy's sermon on lament leads perfectly into a topic that has been on my heart for the last few months.

The discipline of fasting is not particularly popular anymore. You might hear about it during Lent but it isn't regular practice for most of us. Maybe it's because we don't know what the point is.

We are looking forward to a great 2016... in my opinion. When I consider all the things that we are praying for I get excited about the future. What we are believing for in our church and our lives will take an act of God. Dreams and visions are being shared among some of our friends. Within our youth group we are being prepared for a powerful move of God.

If we take a look at the early church in the book of Acts we regularly find the practices of fasting and prayer. However, the Old Testament reason for had been answered by the sacrifice of Jesus. Also, we know that the Holy Siprit was (and is) the source of power in the early church. So, what did fasting add to their prayer life?

On Sunday, I would like to discover together what role fasting may hold in our lives and its potential for the future of our church. See you then.
