A Castle and A Banner (the Lord is a strong tower)

On Sunday, I asked everyone to picture an army, a flag, or a stronghold to help us get an image of what it meant to be under God’s banner (Jehovah Nissi - The Lord is Our Banner). I was picturing various scenes from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. For Joel, it was Kilravock, a castle built in 1460 (see the photos he sent me attached) near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
— Proverbs 18:10

As I read this scripture, Joel was picturing this strong tower, a place that was used during battles to mediate peace between warring armies. It was not a meant for warfare, but was built as a refuge, a place for authority and stability in difficult times. As violence was erupting all around, people ran to this tower for wisdom and protection. What a beautiful picture of being under the banner of Jehovah Nissi.

Whatever this week has thrown at you, remember that your God is able, so, “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Ephesians 6:1

Many blessings,
Pastor Tracy
