Get More From Revelation

As we dive back into Revelation this Sunday, you might notice that we are skipping ahead… way ahead (from chapter 1 to 21!). Our current series is about understanding the middle, beginning, and end of the story, which doesn’t give us a chance to go through this incredible book in more detail.

But Revelation is a book with special blessings attached to it.

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
— Revelation 1:3

And so, if you want to learn more and get deeper into Revelation, we have a NEXT course that’s perfect for you. Head over to our learning platform and log in (create a profile if you need to) to download a PDF copy of Get Ready: A Study in Revelation. We also have hard copies available at the Welcome Centre in the lobby.

Looking forward to these next weeks in Revelation with you,
Pastor Tracy

A Change in Identity (let's talk about water baptism)

If you go to our website and read about being baptized in water, you'll find a lot of great information there, namely, the reasons baptism is so important:

  • It is obedience to Christ's Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20;

  • It follows the example of Jesus;

  • It follows the example of the Early Church;

  • It confirms identification with Christ;

  • It is a testimony of the change in your life.

(See for yourself... freedomkw.com/baptism)

In the book of Colossians, the way that Paul describes the spiritual transaction that baptism models is incredible.

In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
— Colossians 2:11-14

When you are baptized, you are being obedient to Jesus, following His example and making a public declaration of your faith in Him... but you are also making a powerful statement to yourself. Your identity has changed... or, more accurately, has been realigned with who you were created to be as a child of God. Your whole self (identity) that was focused on you is dead and buried, and your life is made new because of your faith in Christ's death and resurrection. You were dead, and God made you alive.

Baptism doesn't save you or make you a "real" Christian. No action can do that; only receiving Christ can. But it is still given to us as a powerful step to take as believers to mark the fact that we have truly been raised to life.

Our next opportunities for water baptism are May 24 (a date that already has someone requesting to get baptized) and May 31 (our next 5th Sunday). If you have a relationship with Jesus and have never been baptized in water, I challenge you to take this step. You can learn more on our website (freedomkw.com/baptism) or talk to any of our pastoral staff (our contact information is on our website).

If you are ready to be baptized but these dates don't work for you, just let us know and we'll happily fill up the tank and celebrate this moment with you on another day!

Grateful to be alive in Christ,
Pastor Tracy

Using the Gifts (stewarding God's grace)

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

Pastor Isaac reminded us on Sunday morning that there are many ways to serve in ministry and invited everyone to find out more. I wanted to follow up and tell you why serving matters so much.

  1. It’s part of our mandate as Christ-followers. 1 Peter 4 makes it clear that whatever we’ve been given, we’re to serve others with it. This is actually a way to show God’s grace. What an incredible opportunity and responsibility.

  2. It connects us. In a world that is increasingly isolating and lonely, the Lord has already built into His Church a way to get connected and stay connected for growth, care, and maturity. Serving puts us in proximity to others and tethers us to the body of Christ, even when we’re prone toward individualism in our Canadian culture.

  3. It challenges us. Serving helps to ensure that we don’t stagnate in our faith. When we’re intentionally rubbing shoulders with other believers, working together for a Kingdom that isn’t our own, it sharpens us. I’ve had the most interesting conversations, received the best insights, and been corrected in my thinking or behaviours most when I am serving.

Wherever it is, whatever gift you’ve been given, hear the call to get active as a faithful steward of God’s grace in its various forms. Let the email nudge you to prayerfully consider how you can serve. And, encourage those around you by calling out the gifts you see in their lives.

Faithfully stewarding with you!
Pastor Tracy

Be Alert... But Not Afraid

When I was in high school, we took a class trip to New York City and for one afternoon, went on a guided tour of some of the famous sites. Before we got off the bus, our tour guide, a native New Yorker, gave us a little speech about pickpockets and general safety in the city. I’ll never forget what she said: “Be alert, but not afraid.”

This is great practical advice for a tourist, but I’ve often thought about it in a spiritual context as well. When I’m thinking about spiritual warfare and the presence of angels and demons, this advice is excellent. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Us Christ-followers don’t bury our heads in the sand, nor do we cower in fear. We are alert for the schemes of the enemy, but not afraid for any reason. Jesus said this dozens of times in the Gospels.

It came up in another context in our Bible-in-a-Year plan this week as well. As Jesus is teaching his disciples about the signs of the end times, He says some pretty disturbing things. He speaks of wars, rumours of wars, nations rising against one another, famines, and earthquakes. (Matthew 24) But unequivocally the command is the same: “See to it that you are not alarmed.” Often in scripture, the phrase translated as “do not be afraid” can be more accurately translated as “stop fearing.”

There is nothing that we should fear. We are hidden with Christ and He is fully in control. But also, there is something we are commanded to do (not just not do): “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” (Matthew 25:13) Yes, there will be signs all around us that the end is near. Choose to keep watch, not to be fearful.

Church, let’s be those who live watchfully, never fearfully. Let’s be courageous and mindful. Let’s be alert but not afraid.

Pastor Tracy

Choose Your Own Adventure (engaging with Genesis 1)

If you were with us on Sunday morning (and not serving in Kids Church - if you were, thank you!), you know that I gave you a “choose your own adventure” response to the sermon. I’d love for you to interact a little more with Genesis 1 this week. Here again are my suggestions.

ONE

Read through Genesis 1 very slowly at least three times, preferably out loud. Before you start, ask the Holy Spirit to speak through His Word. Pay attention to what stands out to you. And, if possible, journal your thoughts.

This is inspired by Lectio Divina ("divine reading"), an ancient, four-step meditative prayer method using Scripture - slowly reading, reflecting, responding, and resting in God’s Word. (Google it if you want to learn more!)

TWO

Research one question that you have about Genesis. Maybe it’s about “young earth” creation, maybe it’s about the dinosaurs. Whatever you’ve wondered about, take some time to look it up and learn more.

If you need some inspiration, here is the full interview of Wesley Huff on “The Diary of A CEO” (we watched a clip of this on Sunday). It’s not directly about questions in Genesis, but it will hopefully get you excited to learn more and set your YouTube algorithm on the right course. Let me know if you need help finding resources for the question that you’re curious about.

THREE

Read through Genesis 1, or listen to it on the audio Bible. Create something that reflects the narrative - a song, a poem, a painting, a drawing, or any other medium that you like. I would love to see your work if you’re willing to share.

Enjoy your long pause in Genesis this week!

After Easter (next step and shoutouts)

Now that I’ve had a couple of naps, I am fully able to reflect on our beautiful Easter weekend. Working with this team to share Jesus’ death and resurrection with everyone who joined us on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, in person or on Church Online, is one of the great joys of my life. Scroll down for some well-deserved shoutouts.

Perhaps my favourite moment (closely rivalled by the Freedom Kids and those amazing monologues) was hearing 23 of you share your testimony of life transformation, what it was like before Jesus, and what it is like now. I had the advantage of editing them together into a video and watching them multiple times, but I loved being in the room when you saw them, too.

Serving Jesus is certainly a laying down of our lives, a full surrender. But there is nothing in this world that compares. I want to invite you to watch the video again and think about who you might share it with. Maybe someone at work has been asking you questions about your faith. Maybe a family member wonders why you prioritize church every Sunday. Maybe you’re trying to explain what it means to follow Jesus to your kids. Go ahead and send them this email or this link: https://youtu.be/MW08ortPqVU

As you share Christ with the people in your life, remember to tell your story. If you need a next step, take a look at freedomkw.com/life for resources that you can use, especially the ebook that is linked there.

So glad that He is risen indeed.

Middle, Beginning, and End (let's start in the middle)

One of the challenging things about life is that you don’t know where you are in the story. You know when you were born, but you don’t know when you’ll die. You might be going through a difficult chapter in your life right now, and you don’t know how many pages of your story this chapter will take up, what page you’re on, or how many pages are left until a new chapter begins. But, as you well know, when you understand how something in your life fits into the bigger picture, it is so helpful. This usually only comes with hindsight; we can look back and see how the chapters are being written… but still, not able to fully understand the one we are in.

While that might be true of your life and of mine, that isn’t true of the story of salvation, the story of how we were created in the image of God, rebelled against Him, and were graciously offered the chance to be reconciled to Him through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. No, we don’t have a percentage tracker of where we are in the story, but we’ve been given the most incredible gift in the scriptures – a view of the beginning, middle, and end.

I want to invite you to jump into the middle of the story with us this weekend and bring someone with you. The Easter story changed everything, and it even gives meaning and purpose to our stories.

You’re encouraged to head to our website (fredomkw.com/easter) for the details and FAQs. You can share this site with a friend, or download the invitation card and send them a text or email.

We’ve been working hard to put together two meaningful services that will point people to Jesus. We can’t wait to see you there.

He is risen indeed!

Reflections, Next Steps, and Stories (looking back on Fast & Pray Days)

There was something really special about our Fast & Pray days last week. Thank you to everyone who took the time to fast and pray. We’ve already seen glimpses of God at work—hearing testimonies of healing, and sensing a deep movement of the Spirit in so many different ways.

We stepped into what 1 Timothy 2:1 calls us to—bringing petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving before God. We were reminded that the weapons we fight with are not of this world (2 Corinthians 10:4), and we prayed the way James encourages us to—asking God for wisdom, trusting in His generosity. We held onto the promises of Jesus in Matthew and Mark, believing that as we pray according to His will and His power, He hears us.

And we didn’t just pray—we practiced waiting. Sitting in His presence. Slowing down. As Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

We also ended the week on Sunday morning—with thanksgiving and praise. Remembering that God inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3), and that we are invited to enter His presence with thanksgiving and praise (Psalm 100:4). He is good. He hears us. And He walks with us.

I want to encourage you to take a moment and reflect:
How did the Lord show up?
How did He speak?
What is He inviting you into next?

While Fast & Pray Days have ended, the call to prayer and fasting has not. Let’s continue to make these practices a regular part of our lives. Another week of prayer and fasting will come, but the invitation to walk closely with Him continues every day.

We would love to hear your stories—how the Lord moved, what He spoke, what this week meant to you. Sharing those stories encourages all of us.

And if you’re still waiting on answers—don’t lose heart. Like the persistent widow, we keep coming. We keep asking. And we stand with you in prayer, continuing to bring it all before the Lord.

Blessings,
Pastor Erin

P.S. If you’re not already part of our prayer team and would like to be—receiving prayer updates and reminders for prayer times—we’d love to have you join. Just email erin@freedomkw.com and we’ll get you added to the list.

Stars in the Night (do you shine?)

I heard the President of Master’s College & Seminary give a devotional at a meeting I attended a few weeks ago that has stuck with me, and is very appropriate during our Fast & Pray Days. It started with this scripture:

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.
— Philippians 2:14-16a

He asked us to close our eyes and picture ourselves way out in the country, far away from any city lights, on a clear, summer night. Imagine yourself looking up. What do you see? Everyone at the table said the same thing - stars.

He said that if the earth were the size of a grapefruit (and so, try to imagine the size of a person in that context), then the distance to the stars in that night sky is as far as from here to Los Angeles. (I fact-checked this and found that it was off because the distance was too short. So, the comparison isn’t perfect, but the point is well made.) Yet, even through those miles and miles of darkness, you see light. The darkness far outweighs the light, but the light is able to break through the darkness.

Remember, as you pray this week, we are living in a “warped and crooked generation.” (But for the grace of God, we’d be a part of it.) And though the darkness seems to be everywhere, the power of a life transformed by the Spirit is like a star in the night sky. That’s what people are drawn to.

Let’s pray that we would have this kind of impact, shining among this generation, pointing each one to Jesus, no matter how dark the night may seem.

Praying with you,
Pastor Tracy

God Had A Plan (Dave & Monica's Story)

Dave & Monica Hancock were recently on a missions trip in Guinea and have an incredible story to tell about a miracle (miracles!) they experienced. We asked them to share it with us. Be encouraged as you read!
_________________________

It was February 25, day 8 of our ten-day visit with local Global Workers, Phil and Judy Bowler. We would be teaching at an English learning school for young adults; Monica would be talking about Canada, and I (Dave) about fire safety. We had with us a small suitcase full of stuff. And that’s the best place to start the story…

As we unpacked the suitcase, I grabbed the AirTag out of the suitcase and put it in my little carry bag. This bag had everything we needed: toilet paper, cough drops, extra battery pack, headphones, money, wallet and passports.

Jump ahead to 8 pm, as we walked home from the Bowlers’ to our guest house. I put my phone in my pocket and not in the bag. The walk takes about 15 minutes, and we had a choice to take the main road instead of the back road. It was Ramadan, and the streets still had a lot of people out getting food and going to prayers. The motorcycles and tuc-tucs are still out zooming around, looking for passengers to pick up.

Monica and I had travelled this way most nights. Nothing about the motorcycles or the tuc-tucs surprised us. So, when a motorcycle crossed the street in front of us and just sat there, no red flags went off. The motorcycle then proceeded to pass us up closer to the buildings. The driver turned around behind us, and as he passed me, he grabbed the shoulder bag and was gone.

Everything we needed to fly home in 2 days was gone.

We stood there in shock. Monica heard me saying, “Really, God?”  Yet, there was an interesting calm in the Spirit. We finished our walk to the guest house, just wanting to get off the street and breathe. We talked with the manager of the mission compound and told him what happened. Peter was very gentle with us and assisted us in getting into our room, and offered to do anything we needed.

I started making calls, first to the Bowlers: details given, prayer request made. Second, I reached out to our life group at Freedom: details given, prayer requested. Third request to family, and so on. We would later find out that people all over the world started to pray as everyone was passing on the need to everyone they knew.

I then contacted the Canadian Embassy: details gathered, emails sent.

Time to pause again; time to pray. First, we forgave, then we praised, and finally, we requested - peace, documents, and purpose. It was time to rest, as we couldn’t do anything at 10:30 pm, except trust God. Just as I closed my eyes, I heard God say, “AirTag”. I grabbed my phone and looked – the tag was right in front of the guest houses on the street. How could this be?

I went and grabbed Peter, and out to the street we went, looking for the bag and its contents. Nothing was found, but the AirTag’s location was right here! We started to ask people around the area as God directed, and then the floodgate of the miracle opened. A young man had a story about a blue bag dropped by a motorcycle guy. It had been collected up by the shop owner across the street. She had taken it to the area Tribal leader, and he had taken it to the police. So off to the police station.

The police didn’t have any good news, so off to the Tribal leader. The time was now around 12:30 am. The Tribal Leader got out of bed, looked me in the face and called me by my name… he had seen the passport! The leader called the Colonel of the police station and it was confirmed that there was indeed a bag with documents at the police station, but that it would need to wait till morning. I returned to the room at 1:30 am.

At 7:30 am in the Colonel’s office, all the documents lay out on the table, and nothing of any true value was missing.

At 8:00 am, Peter gave the Colonel a bible that looked like a Quran, and read scripture to him right in front of the Tribal Leader. The Colonel marked the page and tucked it away. We gave a small gift given to the Colonel, and he gave us his card. The Leader walked us back to his home, and again, another small gift was given. Peter and I headed back to the guest houses. God has given Peter contact with these leaders he never had before, and he plans for future conversations.

By now, we had stopped counting the miracles.

At 9:30 am, the Canadian Embassy in Dakar called me. I was able to witness to the staff member about what God had done. She was in disbelief, and this was the first time we heard, “That doesn’t happen in Guinea”.

Throughout the day, as we told the story, almost everyone commented that this doesn’t happen in Guinea. Hundreds of people prayed, and we saw God do miracles. Hundreds of people were encouraged by God about the power of prayer. And the story has more small God details than can be written about here.

As everyone now knows, we made it home. We learned so much during our time in Guinea and are very thankful that we had no issues with our documents.

A message to the darkness: “You intended to harm me, BUT God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Genesis 50:20

Because God was behind this story, it is not finished until it is finished. Lives were touched – the Colonel, Tribal Leader, young man, thief, shopkeeper, prayer warriors, a large selection of Global Workers in Guinea, people at Freedom, people at the Embassy, and everyone we tell the story to.

God had a plan before we even knew we needed one.

Monica and I are amazed and humbled by what God did in all of this, and we want to say a big thank you to you all. We are available most nights and weekends for food and storytelling… just saying! But really just saying…

Praise God!
Dave & Monica Hancock

When You Fast (Matthew 6:16)

As we get ready for Fast & Pray Days in a couple of weeks, I want to encourage you to be intentional about this time, especially when it comes to fasting. I chatted with you on Sunday about fasting and prayed with you that the Lord would lead us to how He is calling each of us to fast during this time. This may be a spiritual discipline that you practice regularly, or one that is brand new to you. Whatever your experience has been, let’s commit to fasting in some way between March 16 & 22.

I found a great resource from the Bible Project about fasting that I think you’ll find helpful, especially if fasting is new to you. Take a couple of minutes to watch it and then pray, asking God to put in your heart how He wants you to participate.

We’d love to be connected as we pray during FPDs, so head over to freedomkw.com/prayer to let us know how you’ll be participating. There is a helpful prayer guide for each day that will be sent to you when you sign up.

I’m looking forward to seeking God with you this month!

You Go Ahead (don't stop)

I went for a walk early one morning last week. It was dark and foggy. But, with coffee in hand, I kept walking. Without really even noticing, by the time I got home, the fog had cleared and the sun was coming up. I took a minute to check and see if my roof was still ice-damming (that’s another story!) and a couple of other things on the outside of the house that I couldn’t see earlier. Huh. When did it get light enough to see clearly? I’m not sure, but I took advantage of it.

A few days earlier, I had heard that Ron Kenoly, a well-known worship leader in the 90s, had passed away. He had so many incredible songs, but there was one that I thought was so dumb. It’s called “Go Ahead” and the lyrics are: If you catch hell don’t hold it / If you’re going through hell don’t stop / You go ahead, go ahead, go ahead, go ahead, go ahead, don’t stop! That sounded ridiculous to me, even if I understood what he was trying to say. I now know that it is a quote from Malcolm X, but this was before Google.

When I realized that I was now walking around my house being able to see after leaving a half hour earlier in the dark, I found myself singing, “If you catch hell, don’t hold it; if you’re going through hell, don’t stop.” Thanks, Ron Kenoly.

This theme has been coming up as we study The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12). When we face our poverty of spirit, grief, and hunger/thirst, or experience conflict or trouble, we can feel like stopping, quitting, hiding, or retreating. But if we just keep walking, keep trusting the Lord, keep bringing every moment of every day to Him, my experience tells me that Isaiah 61 is right. The sun will rise around you, and you will be able to see clearly.

Take a moment to meditate on this promise from scripture that Jesus told us that He fulfilled.

Isaiah 61:1-4

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,

3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.

There is blessing in every season because we serve Jesus. Praying that the sun would rise around you today, no matter what you’re walking through. (And, I guess, if you catch hell, don’t hold it!)

Pastor Tracy

Lobby Time with Pastor Tracy (if we could chat in the lobby...)

Here is a transcription of today’s Lobby Time video in case you like to read more than you like to watch!

Hey, church family. I wanted to bring you a little bit of lobby time for today's devotional. That's just things I would say to you in the lobby if we had a chance to connect one-on-one.

On Sunday, we talked about grief and mourning. And a couple of things occurred to me. Usually, when I preach for 35 minutes, there's just so much you can't say. And usually I just let that be. But I just got thinking so deeply about this particular topic, and I wanted to say to you, as I was praying and expressing some of the prayers that I had shared in my deepest grief, I heard the way I was even praying it. I haven't personally struggled with suicidal ideation or self-harm, but I know that many people have and do. I heard in my prayers maybe some of the prayers others may be praying, who are really struggling with those things in the depths of their own grief and pain. And I wanted to say to you, you are not alone. This is not the end of your story. And I want to encourage you to reach out for help. If those are prayers you're praying, and it's becoming a desperate situation for you, please reach out for help. Get in contact with me. I'll also leave in this devo a resource for you to reach out to people that you can talk to who specialize in walking you through what that means.

[If you are in crisis, please reach out to a friend, family member, one of your pastors or Here 24/7.]

This is not the end of the story. There is so much ahead of us. And so, I just want to encourage you and give you hope. And if you heard in my prayer something in you that resonated deeply, and you need another step to ask for help, I just want to encourage you to do that.

I had somebody come and share with me a picture that they felt the Lord had shown them on Sunday morning. It's like two wheels that were turning together, and some people feel like they're stuck between those wheels that are grinding together. They're just stuck there, and they can never move, and there's just no good outcome that could come out of their life.

The encouragement from the Lord was that those wheels are moving. And while we might get pressed in a particular situation or in a particular difficulty or in a particular season of grief in our life, God is using that pressing to bring something great out of us, and He is moving. Sometimes it feels like we're stuck in a moment, but God really is moving. So be of good cheer, be hopeful, be encouraged, because what is being produced in your life is for the good, and God is working in your life.

So, while the things that we talked about on Sunday that can become distractions from really dealing with what's going on in our lives and mourning and grieving well with the Lord - like video games, social media, even extreme productivity - those things are benign in themselves. But, I just want to encourage you that you're always keeping an eye on what it is that you're doing with the pain in your life and how it is that you're processing it… Not to demonize any particular form or activity that you're doing, but simply just to say, "Hey, let's keep an eye on these things together.” Let's be mindful of one another's pain. Let's be mindful of our own pain, and let's remember that we can always bring it to Christ.

So, just wanted to share a couple of thoughts with you today and pray that you're blessed as you may be mourning today, that you would be comforted by the Lord.

Even More Learning (or Unlearning)

We are keenly aware of the changing dynamics of our community. We used to be surrounded by fields, now we are surrounded by neighbours. It’s exciting, but it’s teaching us that we have some learning (and unlearning) to do if we want to share Christ effectively across cultures and languages that are different from our own. Church, we’re up for the challenge!

As part of that learning, Pastor Erin is starting a group on February 23rd that is going to help us grow in living out the Great Commission. Here is what she said:

“Did you know that by the year 2030, it is predicted that across Canada we will no longer be known as a monoculture society? In fact, in our bigger cities, this is already true. Isn’t that amazing? Canada is a beautiful country with rich history and rich culture, and we have done this amazing thing over the past decades of inviting other cultures and countries in, and it’s changed our nation. There is diversity and it brings beauty, it brings strength, it brings really good food, and it also brings challenges. Learning to connect within our church, in our community, in our workplaces, and with our neighbours has become more challenging over the years.

“And so, as a church, we recognize that and want to do something about it. We want to be able to connect within our church family and we want to be able to engage with our outside community well, even with the changing tapestry of cultures around us.

“I want to invite you to join me. There is a group starting on Monday nights over Zoom called ‘Culture Cross.’ It’s a study that explores culture, faith, and what it means to follow Jesus in a diverse world. This study was made by Canadians, for Canadians (which we don’t often get). It was made to help us understand what it means to move beyond assumptions and to build Christ-centred relationships rooted in diversity, finding respect, and finding our mutual agreement.

“I would really love for you to be a part of this group. I want our church to be a place that is strengthened by our diversity and I think that this course can help us connect with one another. And, more than that, I want us to be so well-equipped to talk to our neighbour and our co-worker who comes from a different culture, finding common ground and sharing Christ across cultures really, really well.”

She also sent me this note: “Different cultures often experience the gospel through distinct lenses: some through honour and shame, others through guilt and forgiveness, or fear and power, and some with indifference. All of these ways of seeing salvation can be found in the Old Testament and in how Jesus spoke to people about God’s kingdom.”

Consider what an investment of your time into this group could mean for your effectiveness as a witness for Jesus. Let’s learn (or unlearn!) together!

Pastor Tracy

Intentional Unlearning (learn and unlearn)

There are some things in life that we consciously or unconsciously just know. It’s clear to us that the world works in certain ways, that certain actions produce certain results. This learning can be helpful or unhelpful…

  • Helpful: If I eat gluten, my stomach hurts. So, I will not eat gluten.

  • Unhelpful: If I throw a fit, I will get my own way. So, I will throw a fit. (This is the mind of a three-year-old that is so challenging!)

As we get older, though, and gain some wisdom, we start to realize that what we took for granted as being universally true may not be true at all. We understand that we must challenge our assumptions and allow them to be reshaped if we discover that we’re wrong. This could apply to anything from the best way to make chocolate chip cookies to the existence of God.

Our new series is called Learn / Unlearn for this very reason. As we study scripture, we find that there is a lot to learn. It is endlessly rich in what it teaches us. And, our hearts also have to be humble enough to allow the Spirit to “unlearn” some things as well. The Bible challenges our worldview, our behaviours, our assumptions, and our values. It doesn’t take its cues from the culture; it presents an entirely different culture of the Kingdom.

We’ll be working our way through Matthew 5:1-12 over the coming weeks, famously called “The Beatitudes.” They are the opening statements of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, His declaration that things are different in His kingdom. What we assume we know about how the world works likely needs to be “unlearned,” and something far better is being taught.

I invite you to come ready to both learn and unlearn on Sunday as we dive into who Jesus says is blessed!

See you then,
Pastor Tracy

A Castle and A Banner (the Lord is a strong tower)

On Sunday, I asked everyone to picture an army, a flag, or a stronghold to help us get an image of what it meant to be under God’s banner (Jehovah Nissi - The Lord is Our Banner). I was picturing various scenes from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. For Joel, it was Kilravock, a castle built in 1460 (see the photos he sent me attached) near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
— Proverbs 18:10

As I read this scripture, Joel was picturing this strong tower, a place that was used during battles to mediate peace between warring armies. It was not a meant for warfare, but was built as a refuge, a place for authority and stability in difficult times. As violence was erupting all around, people ran to this tower for wisdom and protection. What a beautiful picture of being under the banner of Jehovah Nissi.

Whatever this week has thrown at you, remember that your God is able, so, “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Ephesians 6:1

Many blessings,
Pastor Tracy

The Third Space (welcome back to Groups)

A couple of years ago, I heard a phrase I'd never heard before but immediately connected with. It's "a third place" or "a third space." According to a very helpful article I Googled, "A third place is a familiar public spot where you regularly connect with others known and unknown, over a shared interest or activity." Your first space is home, and your second is work, but people are realizing how important third spaces are.

I was excited when I heard this phrase because, without being told, I already knew that I had access to the best third space. We are the Third Space.

Church, we already have what the human heart is longing for - community that makes a difference in our lives, where people know our names and are doing life with us. And, we have the best reason to create and nurture this space: Jesus. (Since, of course, He's why we gather!)

And, let me point you to one of the most life-giving third spaces that I know of - Groups. New groups start next week and they provide such an excellent third space. They are a place to gather around our shared desire to know Jesus more, connect with others and be known by them. It is always worth the time you invest.

All the information is on our website but here are this season's Groups in a nutshell:

  • Sunday Debrief - Wednesdays - starts January 28

  • Alpha - Wednesdays - starts January 28

  • KidzConnect - Wednesdays - starts January 28

  • Women's Prayer Connection - Tuesdays once/month

  • Men of Freedom - Saturdays once/month

See you in a third space!
Pastor Tracy

Melody & Harmony (bringing your voice)

Some of my favourite courses in college were my conducting courses. I took a theology degree with a major in music ministry, so these were required in my program. I loved them. We had to learn all about the structure of an orchestra, reading scores, choral arrangements, and, in second semester, we got to start using a baton. So fun!

My final exam for this course was to conduct our school choir at the grad ceremony. The song was Psalm 23 and was pretty much everyone’s favourite in choir that year. I wish every exam was like this one! I’ll never forget how fun that was. It was over 20 years ago, but while I was preparing for our current sermon series, I went back and listened to that song a few times. (Yep, I still love it.) I still have muscle memory for how to conduct it, it’s so ingrained in me. It was on in my car on my way to church last week and as I was conducting my imaginary choir, I realized something… being a pastor is a lot like conducting. There are a lot of uniquely gifted people all around me, all bringing their gifts to the group. My job is to help us all create something beautiful together - life transformation and kingdom impact as we are led by the Spirit.

Whether you more often bring the melody (a more up-front role) or a harmony (a supportive role) to church life, all of it matters. However you serve, you are seen and appreciated. It’s so good to have your voice.

If you haven’t stepped onto a ministry team at Freedom, let me encourage you to add your voice. You have been created uniquely and the body of Christ needs you to serve with what you have been given. Ever wondered where you might fit, take a look at this page on our website and ask the Lord to show you where to begin. He’ll lead you!

I also want to let you know that on January 25th @ 6pm we’re having our next session of Next Leadership Training. For details and to sign-up, check out our website. This session is going to be more dreaming and planning for the futur of Freedom. You don’t want to miss it!

You’re invited to serve in new ways this year. Our Staff is always here to help you figure out the next steps. Just give us a shout!

Looking forward to serving with you this year,
Pastor Tracy

Membership Matters (visibly together)

Behind the scenes, we've started working on the details for our Annual Business Meeting (on March 29 @ 6:00pm, by the way). There are motions and nominations and reports to put together. But all of it reminds me of the bigger picture. We take care of these things for much more important reasons than being in compliance with the government to retain our charitable status! (Though, we do it for that reason, too.) I want to take a moment this week to tell you why participating in church life as a member is a great thing to do.

Becoming a member makes your commitment to the body of Christ visible to everyone. You are saying that you will be accountable to others in the body of Christ. You are saying that you belong to a body of believers and are devoted to helping them and serving with them for the Kingdom. We know from 1 Corinthians 12 that we are meant to be members of the church body together. This takes submission to our head, Christ, and a heart to serve each other. Through membership, we declare our investment in the local church as well as the universal Church.

If this is a new idea for you to consider, here is an article about church membership that you might find helpful:

If you're considering becoming a member of Freedom, I would love to have that conversation with you. Here is a link to information about membership and an application form. If you would like to participate in our upcoming ABM, you’ll need to submit your application before March 25th so it can be reviewed at our March board meeting.

Truly, it is an honour to be a member of this church, accountable to, and serving with you.

In Christ,
Pastor Tracy

New Year, New Page (join us in the Bible app)

There are 91 people who have made Freedom “their church” in the YouVersion Bible app. Between us, we were in the Word for 13,295 days in 2025. That’s pretty incredible to think about. I believe that our own hearts, our families and our church have been reaping the benefits of these days.

Reading the Bible is a spiritual discipline and, as such, takes a measure of, well, discipline! Some may find it intimidating, confusing, or overwhelming. But I want to encourage you not to be deterred as we enter 2026. One step at a time, one day at a time, the scriptures will renew and transform your mind (Romans 12:2). And you’re not alone. Your church family is with you every step of the way.

If you haven’t already, we’d love for you to make Freedom in Christ your church on the YouVersion app. We can’t see anything that you don’t share publicly on the app, but it tracks our church collectively and lets us pastors see what people are sharing, highlighting and searching for.

Once you’ve done that, add us as a friend on YouVersion. This is how we do reading plans together, like the one that we are starting today

Yesterday, we finished the Bible-in-a-Year with Malachi 4. Today, we open the Bible freshly to a new page, the first page, and begin with Genesis 1. Will you join us?

Here’s what some of our 2025 Bible-in-a-Year readers said to encourage you…

“As you expose yourself to the scripture every day, God is faithful through the Holy Spirit and His words to give you a golden nugget for the day to lean into and on. It’s warmth for your day.”

“It’s a structured way to help us keep up with the discipline of daily reading. It provides the  opportunity to ask God to reveal things about His character, especially in the hard-to-read portions that we may not think about in our ‘familiar’ passages.”

“In my earlier years as a believer, I went along without reading the Word regularly. My ability to resist the temptations of the world was weakened as a result. When I came through to the other side, I fed on the wod daily like a starving child. It strengthens me and I have seen the fruit of the Spirit grow in me.”

“We live in a time with incredible literacy rates. We live in a time after the invention of the printing press, which has given us easy access to Bibles, further made accessible by the internet. We live in a country where we can freely open, study, and discuss the Bible. None of these things is the historic norm, nor are they a worldwide reality in the present. So given this unique privilege, why wouldn’t you engage with scripture?”

Are you ready to turn the page this year with us?
See you in the Bible app!

Pastor Tracy
