Come Lord Jesus (prayer and readings for the first week of Advent)

Last weekend, the kids and I did what we almost always do on the first Sunday of Advent - decorate the house for Christmas. I like to mark the beginning of the season like this. Maybe you do the same!

Now that the lights are twinkling in my living room, I’m reminded that I don’t want this season to be busy; I want it to be about Jesus. I know I’ll have to be intentional about this over the coming weeks, but that’s what I know will be more valuable than anything else I may do for Christmas.

With that in mind, I want to invite you to follow along with our Advent prayers and offer some scripture readings to help you each week. You’ll find a copy of the prayer we prayed together on Sunday and some traditional passages for each Advent theme in the devotionals all through December.

To start off, we reflect on the hope we have in Christ.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)
