Reaching Around the World (hello from 11,500km away!)

As you read this email I am 11,500 km away. Yep, you read that correctly. We're in Ethiopia! This is a personal trip, one that we have planned to do as a family for a decade. But while we're here we are spending a lot of time with the Fellers, one of our missions families.

It will come as no surprise that what's on my heart this week is all the kingdom work that we are supporting around the world. We set a missions goal of $18,000 this year and we met it in July. Now, all the funds that come in for missions are an extra blessing for these missions families and organizations beyond what we had committed to them. God is good! Thank you for your faithfulness!

So let me just take a moment to remind you that there are about eight weeks left in the year. Maybe God is stirring your heart to give over and above to one of these great families or this wonderful organization right in our own community. I encourage you to step out in obedience and together we can be such a huge blessing in Jerusalem (Ray of Hope), Judea (Pennings), Samaria (Aragons) and the ends of the earth (Fellers).

And let's keep praying for the work that each of our missions partners is doing. It's amazing to see and be a part of what God is up to!

Won't You Be My Neighbour? (this one is about Halloween)

It’s that time or year again when the sidewalks and streets fill with neighbours, friends and family! Let’s take advantage of the one night a year our neighbours are sure to be outside of their homes and knocking on our doors by making them feel welcome, helping them have fun and taking the opportunity to invite them to church.

If your family chooses to participate in Halloween, we've put together a few tips and guidelines for how to use it as a way to reach out to your neighbours. See below!

Community Ministries wants to help you to make this happen!

You can stop by the Welcome Centre on any Sunday in October (7, 14, 21, 28) and pick up hot chocolate mix, cups and a few Freedom Info cards to get your Halloween outreach off to a great start!

During our 5th Sunday service at the end of September I shared our vision and core values with you. This is an exciting time to be serving this church - some days I can hardly believe how amazing our opportunities are.

As a brief recap, we believe that it is vital for every follower of Christ to be:

• Impacting - influencing the world around you for Christ

Without these elements you'll find your discipleship unbalanced. But when you engage with God, go deeper in your knowledge of Him and His Word and let that spill out into your daily mission field, you are on the path to daily transformation in Christ. That's where I want to be!

We know there are lots of ways for you to engage in these core values. We want you to know that we are committed to providing you meaningful opportunities to engage in each of these spheres in growing and challenging ways.

You'll notice that the contact information for each opportunity to connect, train or impact is on the bottom of the card so feel free to send the ministry leader an email and ask any questions you might have.

However you're doing it, whether inside or outside if the scope of Freedom Church, we are all excited to be a part of your discipleship journey as you connect, train and impact. The church is not this building or these programs, it's the people who join together to follow Christ with their whole lives as a local expression of His body. Around the Table (did anyone grab the cranberries?)

In the last day or so there have been emails going back and forth between my family members getting the details straight for this weekend. Who is hosting? Who's making the potatoes? Did anyone remember cranberries? (This is one that I just thought about. Seriously though, did anyone in my family grab cranberries yet? Mom?)

For a lot of you there are similar messages going back and forth as you plan to be together with people that you love for a special meal this Thanksgiving. Maybe you have traditions to uphold. Maybe you have a great aunt who makes a sweet potato casserole that you look forward to all year.

But no matter how you manage to get around the table, what you eat or who carves the turkey, I hope you will find moments to practice gratitude. Being thankful is a lifestyle choice and this season can be so helpful to bring us back to the centre of recognizing the blessing and favour of God in our lives.

If you're in the middle of a difficult season and are struggling to find joy, let me encourage you to look to Jesus. In every circumstance His gift of life and freedom are always something to bring joy and hope.

Vision & Values (5th Sunday is happening!)

Today is Thursday. Things are happening around the church that have my heart beating a little faster. Tables are being set up, the printer is whirring, lights are colour-coordinating and yes, balloons are being ordered. It must be 5th Sunday.

When a month has five Sundays we use the fifth one to celebrate some aspect of church life and we make sure that we seal it with a meal together. This one will be no exception.

Our theme this week is VISION. What do we see God doing here at Freedom and how can we be all in? As I was putting my message together I couldn't help but type a little faster and blink away a few tears. It's more than a little exciting to be talking about God at work in us and through us. I can't wait to share it all with you.

And, of course, there will be something interactive. You are going to get a chance to talk to ministry leaders and find out how you can jump in, take next steps or find a new challenge. That's where the balloons come in... but I'll explain that on Sunday.

Here's what you need to do to be prepared for church this week.

1. Come ready to be inspired.

2. Come expecting to be challenged.

3. Bring a "family favourite" dish to share after the service.

In the meantime, I'll be trying to stay calm.

We've Got Stuff to Handle (who's fighting for you?)

I saw this on a friend's Facebook wall this week. There are times when we feel like giving up, when we don't have enough strength, when we can't take any more. God knows and He doesn't ask us to be braver, stronger or more courageous. He asks us to come to Him to trade our weakness for His strength.

The best part of this FB post is the "we've" part. The message isn't to pick yourself up and do better. It's to never give up because you're not alone.

Just a simple encouragement today.

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

And here's a song that I've been loving lately. Who is fighting for you? You don't have to fight alone.

God's Will For Your Life (it's more simple than you think)

Ever wonder what God's will is for your life? Well, I don't know if you should take this job or that one. I don't know what ministry opportunity you should be saying yes to or what Bible reading plan you should be following right now. The specifics are something we learn to trust God for daily as we listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit leading us.

But here's what I know God wants for me today...

"Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT)

So this is me, living out God's will for my life in this very moment. There is no mystery to this, I choose to practice joy, prayer and gratitude... and I ask for help to remember to keep the posture of my heart focused on these things as I go through my day.

Want to join me? What are you grateful for today? Start there... I always find that gratitude leads to worship and prayer and a heart that is so much more inclined toward joy.

Our Freedom Team at the Williamsburg Community Festival this past Sunday. Way to go, everyone!

This week I've been thinking of how thankful I am for the group of ladies who showed up last week with cleaning cloths and got our Freedom Community Centre ready to welcome students to our FCC programs tonight. We didn't take any photos or publish any names... these women just showed up in the 30+ degree heat and made it happen.

I've been thinking about the team who donned bright green t-shirts on Sunday and played Plinko with our neighbours and gave out prizes, who had conversations about our church and connected with new families. And then there were the Freedom Youth who showed the kids in Williamsburg how to play 9-Square-in-the-Air for hours at a time. So thankful.

And I've been thinking about the people who have been preparing to lead CP1 groups, Encounters and a retreat for Frontline, Sunday School teachers who have committed to another year of investing in our Freedom kids and everyone else who chooses to make the time to impact others. Yeah... how could I not be grateful?

Let's live out God's will for us today. I'm filling my heart with gratitude. Will you join me?

Starting With the Man in the Mirror (get out there and do something!)

The book of James has practical wisdom for how to walk out our faith in tangible ways, living lives of integrity. He's known as an author who gets right to the point. This Sunday's message title was inspired by four verses in the first chapter of his letter:

“
Do no merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it - they will be blessed in what they do.”

— James 1:22-25

As we've been sharing great stories of courage this summer, I wonder if you have asked yourself if you could be one of those people? Do we really believe that God can use us? That we could live to tell stories that inspire the next generation of believers?

So what does it take to go beyond mediocrity? James tells it like it is. We have to be willing to hear the Word and then put it into practice. We can't simply just agree with the principle and not allow it to transform our lives. And when we do what is the result? Freedom and blessing! A life of faith truly is extraordinary.

While I was at General Conference in May, Val Rutten (a PAOC missionary in Ethiopia) was being interviewed and one of her responses lit up the room (and became Tweet-worthy, see side). Want to break out of a pattern of looking in the mirror and forgetting what you've seen? "Get out there and do something!"

Listing vs. Growing (I love check marks!)

Moving houses is a lot of work but there is a silver lining. It's list-making heaven... if you like that kind of thing. I have been going crazy with my list-making. I have lists for everything and if I follow them, everything will get done on time and in an orderly fashion. I mean, sure, I actually have to do everything I've listed but for now I'm sleeping soundly knowing that I have a plan to get it done.

A friend recently sent me a Veggie Tales video that reminded her of me (and her!). It's basically a young carrot singing about how much she loves check marks. (Go ahead and click the link, it'll put a smile on your face.) Whether you consider yourself an organized person or not, you'll probably agree that it's a great feeling when you can check something off of a list. Actually, I know for a fact that some of you make lists of things you've already done so that you can go and check them off. #truth

As I've been staring at my moving lists for a few weeks I've been thinking about how much of our real lives can't be articulated by a list. You can't make a list of how you will be a more patient parent, a more loyal employee or a better friend. You can't check off the fruit of the Spirit in your life - love, check; joy, check; peace, check - because these are things that grow in your life as you surrender to Christ daily. They are cultivated by the Holy Spirit in you, not achieved.

And so, as we enter in a major list-making season (how's that back-to-school shopping going?), let me encourage you not to wait until everything is in perfect listed order before you spend time in the Word. Don't wait until the coffee is brewed to 96 degrees exactly and every sock is matched and put away before you call out to God in prayer. Don't believe that conditions must be perfect before you can invest in your relationship with Jesus. You don't need to make a list for these things, you need to develop the habit of daily obedience. In the same way that you don't tell your tomato plants how many centimetres to grow each day, you simply care for them; do the same thing for your walk with Christ.

Staging Your Life (what's in the boxes?)

In the last two weeks Rob and I bought and sold a house. (It's just a hop, skip and jump from church still!) There are a lot of details that go into moving and we've been so blessed by the sense of God's presence and peace as we've made this decision for our family and future.

But there was one part of the process that really grabbed my heart with a spiritual metaphor: staging. It took us a week to set up our house so it was ready to show to strangers in hopes that they would make us an offer. And it really did look great. Almost perfect, in fact. However, we achieved that by boxing up a bunch of our stuff and stacking it in the garage. We took down all the photos of our family or anything else that was personal so that potential buyers could picture their own families in the space. In the end, it looked like our house but without the heart. So much was hidden away to present a certain impression.

Though the whole experience I thought over and over again about how we do this in our spiritual lives way too often. Someone who grew up in church recently said to me, "I need to make some changes in my life and then I'll come back to church." My heart just broke. Where did we ever get the idea that we had to stage our lives in order to be accepted by Christ? Where did we learn that we have to box up our messes and hide them in order to come to Jesus?

In this metaphor, Jesus is the one who joyfully comes over to your house when He is invited no matter how disheveled it is. And when you're tempted to box your mess and hide it, He gently opens each box and works through the contents with you.

I never want to forget this. His great love meets us and transforms us. We don't change ourselves so that we can meet Him. That's amazing grace. Hold on to that truth. It's the gospel, the good news of the life we have in Christ.

Summer Reading (a book review from me to you)

Many years ago I had a book recommended to me called The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives by Dallas Willard. I eventually bought a copy of this book and it sat on my shelf for a while. I mean, you can't blame me. I could immediately tell that this wasn't going to be like putting my feet up with the latest Grisham novel. But one day I did crack it open. I took a deep breath and I dove in. Am I ever glad that I did.

If you are looking for some great reading this summer let me recommend this one. You may or may not agree with every statement the author makes (when do we ever?) but I can almost guarantee that you will be challenged and encouraged and stirred up in your heart. And, like me, you'll probably learn a few new things while you're at it. I always do when I read great books!

And hey, while I'm at it, let me add a couple more that I have loved and found helpful.

Core Value Check: IMPACTING (how are you getting ready for the fall?)

I know that we are only halfway through this beautiful summer season and I'm not ready to give up on the warm evenings or BBQs yet. But I am starting to think about the fall and make plans for our next season. The kids have new backpacks already (unexpectedly found some great ones at Winners the other day!), I'm planning to go through their closets next week and see what they need for school clothes, and it's almost time to sign them up for their sports activities. I'd guess that a lot of you are starting to think about these things too.

Freedom in no exception. We are finalizing the details of our programs that launch again in September and working hard to get our ducks in a row... even as we work around our wonderful summer holiday time!

One of our core values here at Freedom is IMPACTING: Positively Influencing the World for Jesus. We believe that being involved in impacting others for Christ is a vital part of being a disciple of Jesus. It makes sense, doesn't it? If our lives are being truly being transformed, there is a passion to share that same love, grace and change with others.

My first year teaching at the School of Music (@ the FCC) in fall 2010! 

So as you're starting to plan your fall I want to encourage you to ask yourself: Am I impacting anyone with the amazing good news that is changing my life?

There are so many ways you can do this... at work, with your family, with a not-for-profit in our community, in your neighbourhood and on it goes. We also have amazing opportunities right here at Freedom. I mean, we have our own community centre! You don't have to start a new organization - you are welcome to jump into something that is already going on. We love linking arms with you to impact KW for Jesus!

Whatever it is, wherever it is, I invite you to go ahead, pray and plan for more than just your kids' sports activities and wardrobes. Ask God how you can impact your world for Him. I'm doing that with my family - join me!

🙌 5th Sunday is Here! (you're going to want to get excited)

Why do we make such a big deal about a month with five Sundays? We know it's great every time that we get together and we celebrate life-change through Christ every Sunday. 5th Sundays just give us an excuse to celebrate in a bit of a different way.

So, this Sunday, come ready for something a bit out of the ordinary. Come ready to celebrate being a part of the Church who worships!

We're hoping to have an outdoor service in church picnic style so here's what you need to know to get ready...

1. Dress for the weather.
2. Bring a lawn chair and umbrella or sun shelter if you have one.
3. Bring a couple of picnic-type dishes to share.
4. We'll provide a popsicle/ice cream-type dessert and lots of water.

We're going to celebrate how the church has worshipped together through the decades, have "special music", celebrate a water baptism and even have a chance for some testimonies. You won't want to miss it!

Service starts at 10:00am and the picnic will follow.
(We'll be indoors if the weather doesn't cooperate. Rain or shine, come excited!)

The Power of Inefficiency (have you "wasted" any time lately?)

I love efficiency. I get a little giddy when I find out that there is a better or faster way to get something done. I don't drive anywhere without considering how many lights I might have to sit at or how much traffic I will encounter. I organize my grocery list so that I don't have to backtrack through the store. I don't pack for a trip until every piece of laundry is cleaned, folded and put away so that I don't have to return to the job over and over again. If I can order something online for the same price, I definitely will... and let it just come to my door. I like checking off lists and feeling accomplished at the end of the day. You get the picture. I suspect I've just divided you into two groups: those of you who are breathing an amen and those who feel a bit suffocated.

While our family was away doing worship ministry at Sunset Point Camp in Alberta, we had the chance to take a canoe out on Lac St. Anne. Rob is a very proficient canoe-ist and I knew all I'd have to do is paddle and he'd get us where we wanted to go. Before we set out I had just finished answering a bunch of emails and generally having a productive afternoon. After we'd been paddling for about ten minutes I realized a couple of things:

1. The noise of the shoreline was disappearing. (Canoes are so quiet!)
2. The water was beautiful and the setting incredibly peaceful.
3. Paddling is extremely inefficient.

Sure, we were moving through the lake but we weren't getting anywhere quickly. Pretty soon, the only sound we heard was our wooden oars dipping in and out of the water. And that's when I had this thought: times of inefficiency are so very good for the soul.

I'm not talking about idleness or laziness, I'm talking about strategically spending time accomplishing nothing but quieting your heart.

Our calendars are full, our inboxes are full, our kitchen sinks are full and we strive for better strategies to get it all done and keep it all in order. And truthfully, ordering our worlds is an important discipline for effectiveness in our life and ministry. But ordering your life is about more than that calendar or inbox. There has to be time "wasted" doing whatever it is that quiets your mind and soul.

So go out and inefficiently paddle to the middle of the lake... or whatever you do to move away from the noise. Maybe it's tea on the porch swing (without your phone!). Maybe it's a walk through your neighbourhood with worship in your heart and/or on your iPod. Maybe it's a hike with your family or day at the beach unplugged from the calendar. I can't think of a better season to be intentional about this life-giving practice. Use this beautiful summer season to get this habit into your DNA.

An Easter People (and a little flock)

Pope John Paul II once said,

“We do not pretend that life is all beauty. We are aware of darkness and sin, of poverty and pain. But we know Jesus has conquered sin and passed through his own pain to the glory of the Resurrection. Do not abandon yourself to despair. We are an Easter people and hallelujah is our song."

You, dear friends, are an Easter people. You have hope that anchors your soul in any season and every circumstance. You have a gentle Shepherd who leads you beside quiet water and without fear through the valley of the shadow of death. (Psalm 23)

When Luke, the gospel writer, records Jesus teaching on not worrying he tells us that Jesus said, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been please to give you the kingdom." (Luke 12:32)

So, little flock, whatever worry or stress or trouble you are facing today, remember: You are an Easter people and hallelujah is your song.

The Truth Is (of prayer and prayerlessness)

“The truth is that we only learn to pray all the time everywhere after we have resolutely set about praying some of the time somewhere.”

— Richard Foster, Prayer

This quote (and many others) is highlighted in my copy of Prayer by Richard Foster. It struck a chord with me because of its simple truth. We can learn all there is to learn about prayer, we can study it all day long, but unless we put it into practice we really don't know anything at all. 

If you've ever felt frustrated by or ashamed of your prayer life, you're not alone. 

"We today yearn for prayer and hide from prayer. We are attracted to it and repelled by it. We believe prayer is something we should do, even something we want to do; but it seems as if a chasm stands between us and actually praying. We experience the agony of prayerlessness.

"We will never have pure enough motives, or be good enough, or know enough in order to pray rightly. We simply must set all these things aside and begin praying. In fact, it is in the very act of prayer itself - the intimate, ongoing interaction with God - that these matters are cared for in due time."

- Richard Foster (Prayer, chapter one)

Even as we've been asking Jesus to teach us in His school of prayer over the past several weeks, I invite you to join me in praying the prayer that Foster write at the end of chapter one. 

"Dear Jesus, how desperately I need to learn to pray. And yet, when I am honest I know that I often do not even want to pray. I am distracted! I am stubborn! I am self-centred! In your mercy, Jesus, bring my 'want-er' more in line with my 'need-er' so that I can come to want what I need. In your name and for your sake, I pray. Amen."

The fact of the matter is that we are all gifted. Yep, you. Same with me. We have gifts that have been given to us as a member of the body of Christ. And in fact, there are gifts that the Holy Spirit gives the church that go beyond the ministry gifts that each of us possess. Thanks to the grace of God, we are truly a gifted people. The question is... do we know how to recognize and use these amazing gifts? I'm looking forward to talking with you about it on Sunday.
